  7. CARIS is comprised of 30 software modules that can be grouped in three
  8. categories: data collection and presentation, topological creation, and
  9. database analysis. Data collection and presentation handles the capturing of
  10. data from digitizers, stereoplotters, or exchange reformats from other similar
  11. systems, automated editing function like templates generation contour
  12. generation and eventual symbolization and plotting of data. This category also
  13. contains some specialized software, such as digital elevation models and data
  14. generalization techniques

  16. Topological creation is designed to take digital cartographic data and enhance
  17. its intelligence based on mathematical relationships established when topology
  18. is constructed. This intelligence cannot be handled effectively with textual
  19. databases. However, CARIS can be linked to a RDBMS to provide textual
  20. support

  22. Database analysis allows the user to query the database based on textual
  23. questions (SQL) and the topological relationships established in the graphics.
  24. The size of the database can be very large which allows users to take advantage
  25. of distributed processing and file serving techniques
  26.  
  27. CARIS' uniqueness lies in its ability to handle 3-D data over mid-size and
  28. large databases. CARIS is used in municipal, forestry, environment agriculture,
  29. hydrography, and similar other applications.
